Digital Emergency Healthcare for Remote Communities
Emergency telehealth care is a well-established approach to decongesting urban emergency departments and hospital avoidance. Metro-based virtual emergency care assumes access to reliable internet, road transport, pharmacies and timely treatment by skilled clinicians in case of deterioration, however many remote communities are unable to support permanent health or pharmacy services. This session will discuss a novel approach to 24/7 emergency medical care with no health professional physically in the room - a standalone Virtual Emergency Care Centre in outback South Australia. The centre – replicable and scalable for other additional remote locations – incorporates satellite connectivity, telehealth, diagnostic equipment and hospital-grade pharmaceutics delivered by laypersons to a purpose-built facility under remote professional medical direction. The impact on both immediate treatment and retrieval avoidance will be discussed alongside upcoming innovations in supporting technologically advanced and environmentally responsible emergency care.
