John Craven
Emergency Specialist - Mount Barker Emergency Department
Professional Bio
Associate Professor John Craven BSc (Hons) BMBS FRACP FACEM GradDipClinEd
As a young doctor, John was inspired by a rotation in Paediatric Emergency to train simultaneously in Emergency Medicine and Paediatrics. His peripatetic training took him from Adelaide to Alice Springs, Ireland, United Kingdom, and Canberra before returning to Adelaide in 2011 to develop paediatric emergency services at Flinders Medical Centre. In 2016, he was appointed as a Retrieval Consultant with MedSTAR kids and become Head of Unit the following year. After 6 years in this role, he made the decision to take on the challenge of developing acute services at Mt Barker Hospital, where he is the Clinical Director of the Emergency Department. He has teaching appointments at Flinders, Charles Darwin and Adelaide Universities, with a specific interest in undergraduate and postgraduate paramedic and prehospital education.
In his spare time, John keeps bees and chickens, swims, teaches paediatric life support, and juggles multiple patient care improvement projects with keeping his Labrador puppies exercised. He has an anecdote for most occasions.
